FLASHPOINTS

I often write about following our passion, committing to serving others, and seeking significance to achieve super-charged results. But, what happens when we can’t quite identify or articulate our passions? Keep in mind that everything new or outside our inherent strengths will seem like hard work … whether we’re passionate or not. Discovering our passions, however, requires reflection and exploration. So, get out! Travel, volunteer, serve others, and push the boundaries a bit. Think about the things you enjoy doing when you aren’t working: What gets you excited? What do you like to read and learn about? With whom do you surround yourself? Where do you like to be? Among these exercise and exploits we’ll likely find our ticket to a more meaningful existence. Is your path to greatness paved with passion?

The way to love anything is to realize that it might be lost. ~ G.K. Chesterton

When you’re feeling your worst, that’s when you get to know yourself the best. ~ Leslie Grossman

There is no doubt that positive thinking has its benefits! But just thinking positively doesn’t get us far when the bills are due. In a world of action, innovation and being proactive to get the most out of our teams, careers and personal lives, it’s time to think and do positive! Norman Vincent Peale didn’t just think about “The Power of Positive Thinking,” he actually did something and wrote it! Positive doing is what’s needed to release our positive thoughts to the world. We must take that first step outside our current comfort zone to serve others. Until we take that step, we’re only dreaming. Decide now to turn your positive thinking into bold, consistent action. What positive thought will you turn into action today?

When recruiting team members, do you consider how team dynamics may shift with the latest addition? While that decision may not mean life or death to individual team members, personality conflicts could mean life or death to our organization. It’s really that serious. Consider these tips when introducing new key team members: (1) Understand what inspires the team, then reinforce it during seasons of growth. (2) Inform the team why a superstar was chosen over other candidates, to reinforce the positive attributes and expectations we hold for the team. (3) Remind each team member how they positively impact the success of the team. (4) Make course corrections by enlisting new members if recent recruits simply don’t perform. What will you change for your next recruit?

Where should we expand? How fast? When’s the best time? So many questions and considerations! Abraham Maslow said, “You will either step forward into growth or you will step back into safety.” That’s a great way to look at the growth of our professional and personal pursuits. If we lack courage to step forward, we’re actually moving backward as the fast-paced world passes us by. If we’re really committed to excellence and to expanding our horizons, we must decide that we want to grow … then we’ll figure out the “how.” Take refuge in knowing that no matter which direction we start in, should we misstep, we’ll have opportunities to make course corrections along the way. Ready? Let’s go! What’s the most significant area in which you want to grow?

Sometimes in me, there are definite beginnings and ends, but never when there’s a genuine human connection involved. When it comes to relationships and expanding our spheres of influence (notice I did not say “network”), there is never a limit on how we can interact with people. Even when we move on from close-knit relationships, there’s often the opportunity to keep that door open and revisit the relationship in the future. To have this freedom, we must remain in contact with our tribe; this could be as simple as sending a “hello, just thought of you” card, or email, or text. My advice: keep your doors ajar. Whom can you quickly reconnect with today?

Life is full of choices. Dream or do? Lead or follow? Speak up or shut up? Our everyday choices will form who we are and will frame how our friends, fans, family and foes will remember us. We must possess the courage to do the hard right, over the easy wrong. What’s most profound is that we’re the only one who’ll ever really know whether we’re content with the choices we’ve made. Consider this: every choice we make is an opportunity to show our true colors. Like it or not, people are watching our every move. Decision-making is our opportunity to step into our God-given potential by taking action and being honest with ourselves (and our loved ones) about the greatness we hope to achieve. How will you be remembered?

If I had to kick the person most responsible for my problems, I couldn’t sit down for a week! ~ Dwight L. Moody

Motivation is one of the most overused buzzwords in business. Close runner-ups include: enthusiasm, innovation and inspiration. The truth is, no matter what word is used to describe the feeling inside that makes us wake up and strive to be our best, it’s some form of motivation. There’s a reason people use these words so frequently when describing a positive leader: inspiration and action are the keys to unlocking the fullest potential in us all. When we can identify that task, interest or quirk that creates excitement in the hearts of our teammates, we’ve found a way to incentivize the people who help us grow our ideas and move us from dreaming to doing. Is there alignment between what inspires you and what inspires those on your team?

As our teams and dreams grow (and sometimes fail), it’s important to remember that we’re getting closer to our cause. Too often, we’re so caught up in our own personal and professional development and training programs that we forget to cast our eyes and energy on the development of those around us. Check priorities and ensure that the team has sufficient tools and resources to act successfully, give them ample opportunities to learn, and be driven by a desire to serve others. Most importantly, ask teammates what they hope to accomplish by being part of our tribe (using private one-on-one meetings, confidential surveys, group meetings, etc.), then seek to make this their reality. How can you help make the hopes and dreams of your teammates a reality?

We talk a lot about reaching for our dreams and crafting a vision for success—but what’s the fun in dreaming, if dreams don’t come true? Listen up, doubters. They DO! Sure, it takes guts to dream big, but let’s face it, the next step is the scariest. That is, trusting that if we chase after our dreams with gusto, that it’ll all work out. So start with the easiest part: Dream BIG! Let’s pinpoint what it is we want out of life. What do you see in your future? What excites you? There’s one critical step we must not forget: have complete faith that somehow, some way, we will attain our dreams. No second thoughts, 100% belief. Do you believe? Good! What one step will you take in that direction?
