FLASHPOINTS

We all have those few insignificant tasks that seem to stay on our to-do lists forever. They drop to the bottom of the list and then just linger. While there’s nothing wrong with a to-do list, these ever-present tasks can zap our mental energy, prevent us from finding clarity and hold us back from reaching our fullest potential. If we really want significant breakthroughs, here’s the challenge: start from the bottom of that to-do list today and honestly assess why those tasks haven’t yet been tackled. Do they require strengths, skills and talents that lay outside our comfort zone? If so, delete them from that list, delegate them to another team member, or defer them to another time. What’s on your to-do list that you can delete, delegate, or defer?

Mentors aren’t just for entrepreneurs or business people any longer. Everyone can learn from others who have “been there and done that.” It wasn’t long ago when mentors became recognized as important assets for emerging entrepreneurs and small business owners. Until then, only serious, career-minded executives and big-league business owners even considered this luxury. If forced to pick just one strategy or tool to help find success in any endeavor, it would be having a mentor (or several). Who isn’t keen on a more abundant, joyful and highimpact existence? The truth is, we all strive for a more successful and significant life… whatever that might mean to each of us. Open your mind to your greatest possibilities and reach your fullest potential: In what mentoring relationship can you be engaged?

If you're doing something the same way you have been doing it for ten years, the changes are you are doing it wrong. Charles Kettering

Half of being smart is knowing what you are dumb about. Solomon Short.

It’s bolder than religion or pop culture, bigger than the latest breaking world news, and better than the release of Apple’s latest iProduct! I’m talking about the power of presenting our authentic, true selves to the world. Although it’s often the most challenging and painful events in life that ignite our spark of authenticity and transparency, the journey usually leads to our most significant season of joy, freedom and connectedness. Most of us are afraid that if others really know us for who we really are, they’d run the other way. Yet, it’s the alignment of head and heart, thinking and saying, feeling and doing, that others find most attractive about us. Authenticity builds trust, and followers love leaders they trust. How can you stretch and be more authentic today?

FLASHPOINTS Week 2, Thursday

There are self-doubters and downers who don’t consider their own efforts legitimate until their craft is paying the bills. Similarly, there are those leaders and achievers who don’t see the significance of their successes as much more than impressive feats to list on a resume. Stop doing that! The critical roles we play have a positive and direct impact on the health of our communities and shouldn’t be treated as hobbies. The valuable services we provide our spheres of influence can change lives and should serve as a significant form of self-expression. This realization occurs when we stop making things all about us and start making it about serving others. How would your self-expression and choices be made if they were based on serving others?

In virtually every area of life, success is often defined by innovation. While some ideas may come to us in the shower, those at the cutting edge know it’s important to build their clutter-free days around dreaming, trying new things, and generating new ideas. When it comes to ideation and creation, it’s really no coincidence that someone beat us to the finish line. Simply put—they thought of it first because they set out to do so. If we want to find our next big idea, we can’t wait for it to magically appear while lathering up in the shower. Schedule brainstorming and creative open space into the calendar each week and ask provocative questions about systems, services and products. What will you start doing today to allow for innovation?

Most of us spend more time at work than doing anything else; it’s no wonder some of our most significant friendships are with people at work. At one extreme, these friendships lead to distractions or too much of a relaxed environment; at the other extreme, nurturing these friendships produces benefits such as team cohesion, increased trust and focus on the mission. To gently foster unit cohesion and team spirit, how about a weekly lunch, or moving the Friday night drinks to Wednesday for a mid-week boost, or introducing a monthly service project to help assist others in need? Work some conversation and fun into your team’s schedule, so it isn’t missed during work hours. You’ll be surprised how the smiles and productivity skyrocket! What will you do for play today?

FL7

the bad news is time flies. The good news is, you're the pilot. Michael Altshuler

At the core of so many discussions is this familiar refrain: “I wish I had more time!” Really? Do you really think you’d have a better grasp on your life if you had a longer day, or would you simply stuff those bonus hours full of more mundane to-dos? Perhaps more hours in the day isn’t the right way to look at it. How about setting more realistic timeframes and deploying the appropriate resources to reach the goals to begin with? Smarter still, we must surround ourselves with higher-functioning teammates to help get more done (with less). Or consider an overhaul of our systems—maybe there are ways to save time, talent and resources. How can you stuff greater results (not tasks) into your tomorrow?

Authenticity and genuine leadership rarely intersect, so it’s tough to identify role models who excite us and cause us to reach for our fullest potential. Whereas mentors can be found in the writings and recordings of those long since passed, the rules for this scenario are they must be alive, contactable, and worthy of emulation! Personally, I find it difficult to find all the great traits that inspire me wrapped up in one person, so I admire specific traits in specific people. When we admire someone, we must let them know … don’t keep that gift of encouragement to yourself. Sometimes a simple word of thanks can fuel the next great breakthrough. Everyone needs a cheerleader, even our heroes and role models. Who inspires you to greatness? Tell them that!

Every innovation, romance, discovery and adventure began as the fantasy of an optimistic daydreamer. I once heard that we should be focusing our energy and resources on those things we think about when we daydream (or what we do when we’re procrastinating). Let your mind wander around that one for a minute! For some people this simply means spending more time doing what we love or getting intentional about our bucket list; for others, it means a long overdue career change. Ouch! How honest are you with yourself about what excites you? Although a simple question, it can be difficult to answer because it takes courage to give ourselves permission to dream big. Schedule time to daydream, and note where your mind wanders. Where’s your mind taking you today?
