FLASHPOINTS

Ever had a thought on your mind so big that it caused you major distractions in just about every area of life? When it’s standing in our way and keeping us from being fully present with our business or project, we have two options: One, we can ignore it and continue with the reduced productivity, lack of focus, and inability to deeply connect with people; or two, the more difficult but most effective option, DEAL WITH IT! When it comes time, we must be brazen and address it head on—within ourselves or with the assistance of others. It’s time to remove the nonproductive mental and emotional chatter and create room again for what’s really important—positive, uplifting mental messages. What negative mental chatter do you have that needs to be removed?

As kids, we had plenty of hopes, aspirations and dreams. We wanted to be an astronaut, rock star, princess, fireman, etc. Now that we’re older, we’ve gotten more “realistic.” But should we be? (Realistic, that is?) Just search the web for “older entrepreneurs” and read their stories. These people have kept their hopes and dreams of success not just alive but vibrant, and they’re cultivating lives of significance. In their minds, they minimized their limitations and simply believed it could happen—NOTHING stands in their way. The fact is, there’s really no barrier any of us can’t overcome to make our dreams come true. Have you lost sight of your big vision? What needs to happen to prevent you from the dreaded words, “I’ll do that … some day”?

You can't have a better tomorrow if you're thinking about yesterday. Charles Kettering

The right to do something does not mean that doing it is right. ~ William Safire

How do we define servant leadership? Its distinction is clear: we put the needs of others first and do what’s necessary for the team to reach their fullest potential, rather than accumulating power and prestige for our own glory. When we become involved in the lives of our team members and discover what makes them tick, we’re in a position to positively influence their behaviors and actions. Challenging ourselves and our teammates toward greater accomplishments and self improvement inspires a surge of personal and professional growth. (That’s a good thing … and leads to powerful change.) Servant leadership requires a humble spirit, a caring heart and the ability to share the spotlight of success. How well are you serving the needs of others?

Among the responsibilities of effective leaders is to create highly functioning teams and to continually strengthen them for battle. Sometimes new tools must be purchased, or team members subtracted or added to the mix, or opportunities provided to learn new skills. How do we determine the critical needs of our team? Ask! An open and honest work environment where information flows freely from top to bottom, and even sideways, is vital to the health of strong, vibrant teams. So, put your pride on the shelf, and ask them what they need. Sure, some may mention fewer working hours and increased bonuses; however, if the right team is in place, they’ll be thoughtful and communicate their needs because they want to excel. What steps will you take to strengthen your team?

We’ve all heard the adage, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” That’s true, but only to a point. While planning gives us a roadmap to follow, it requires action to move down that road toward success. Unfortunately, the real road we’re traveling down has unanticipated potholes, curves, and roadblocks which come in the form of last-minute changes and unintended obstacles. Invariably, we’ll only know about them when we’re about to hit them head on. Nothing is ever certain; and nothing is so important that planning out a course of action is more important than getting it done. In the cycle of Plan-Do-Review, don’t forget about DO! What projects or tasks could get you closer to your goal if you did less planning and more doing?

Opportunities are problems waiting to be solved; those that solve them reap the rewards. Being a problem solver is not just for ourselves—those around us MUST be adept at it. But can we promote more effective problem solving? Consider it two sides of a coin. Each individual must: (1) possess the desire to problem solve and think creatively and (2) be comfortable with and capable of problem solving together with others. So why not emulate a sports team and practice? Do a fun problem-solving challenge at the next team meeting. It will provide insights into how each person thinks and raise the collective skill level of the team. How well do you problem solve as a team, and what can you do to increase that?

That line of thinking that the best mentors come only from the ranks of the uber-successful needs to be reconsidered. If not, here’s what can happen: (1) the mentor is so advanced that relating to them is not possible, or their methods don’t work anymore; or (2) we’re too intimidated to even ask that person for mentoring! A better approach is to seek someone who is simply a few steps ahead, has a heart aligned with ours, and to whom we can provide some value. Because life and business are about doing what we can today to further ourselves, and we need to be crystal clear on what that is. How far out in front of you are your mentors? Are their values aligned with yours?

A man's word is the only thing he can give, but yet keep.

3What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals. Zig Ziglar.

We’ve been taught to give because we’ll be better off for it in the long run. But that seems to go against what’s becoming an increasingly common mindset: instant gratification. Sure, we’ll give if we get a quick return. But even the old phrase, “What goes around comes around,” which we’d all agree is true, doesn’t have an associated time frame. We’re much better off by giving without requiring immediate returns. While doing good with an agenda is okay, doing good without an agenda is powerful. Powerful for us and the world. Plus, it’s an indication of our true character, which will always, eventually, be shown. Are you giving more because you’ll get more, or simply because you want to give? Write down 3 examples that prove your conclusion either way..

Write down your vision statement now. Does it still inspire and give meaning to your life and endeavors? Does it produce the same for your team? (Are they even able to articulate it?) If not, it may need a rewrite or refresher. After years of chasing our dreams, and fighting the good fight, we sometimes realize the grip it once had on our heart (yes, our heart, not our head) has slipped away. We may even be heading in a different direction. If you’re looking to shake things up a bit, but you’re not sure where to start, ask yourself: 1. What impact am I looking to make on the world? 2. Is that where my business/life/project is headed? 3. What needs to change to align the answers?

Sure, we want to be high achievers, but that doesn’t mean we must be serious and dour in every pursuit. For the sake of sanity (of you and your team), lighten up and enjoy the journey. Too often, we get so focused on addressing the urgently important issues that face us that we forget the value of fun and laughter to our health and well-being. It’s obvious that when participants of a project, team or task are happy (including ourselves)—we’re more engaged and willing to put forth extra effort. Laughter is, after all, the best medicine … so encourage smiles and laughter in those around you by introducing an element of fun every day! What can you do to insert a more light-hearted and fun spirit into your journey?
