FLASHPOINTS

We’ve heard it said many times before: “Nothing great was ever accomplished alone.” Great leaders recognize this fact and attribute their success to their teams. Think about that for a minute—every achievement in our lives, every success, has been a result of the actions of many, not just our own. Sure, it takes a great leader to lead a successful team, but it also takes a great team to support that leader and to take on their goals as their very own. How do you reward those who have achieved success with you?

Having an exceptional life comes with a boatload of decision-making and risk-taking. Sometimes outcomes don’t match expectations, which leads to that dreaded F-word: FAILURE. And as people who take responsibility for our own actions, we’re often quick to point the finger and lay blame on the same person over and over: ourselves. Dwelling on these negative experiences doesn’t make them any less so—in fact, quite the opposite. Yet ignoring failures is also a mistake—we must embrace them, learn, and move on. Most importantly, we must forgive ourselves and let go of the negativity. So, next time the mental blame-game starts, we shouldn’t be too hard on ourselves; we’re all only human, after all. How can you embrace your humanity and cut yourself a break?

It is often through others that we realize who we really are in life. For example, have you ever noticed that we offer kindness and compliments to others, yet we don’t reward ourselves with the same? Interesting isn’t it, that we often place the happiness of others ahead of ourselves, even in everyday-life situations? But that’s what leadership is all about—it’s the perfect example of service to others. Courage, encouragement, generosity, and passion can create lasting improvements in the lives of those around us … resulting in a more vibrant, trusting, cohesive community. How can you better serve your team and community in the next week?

The pain we feel when someone leaves our life is in direct proportion to the joy they bring while a part of our life… ~ Javan

We must take change by the hand or rest assuredly, change will take us by the throat. ~ Winston Churchill

Achievers have many ideas, hopes, and dreams across a lifetime. But which is worthy of our blood, sweat and tears? If we’ve dreamed it more than once, it must have some measure of importance. Then it might just need a little focus. First, think about the daydreams we wander to most often because, for some reason, these have a special connection to us. Next, prioritize: are any of the dreams time-sensitive, meaning should we go after them ahead of others? Third, tell a few trusted advisors to discover how much passion we have as we work through the minefield of figuring out how to sell it. Because then we’ll end up selling to our number-one customer—ourselves. What dream of yours is worth fighting for?

I hate the classic networking events, because they’re all about taking. Successful networking, like successful relationships, are more about adding value to another person’s cause, rather than focusing on the rewards we might reap. Community (and the world, for that matter) is built on successful relationships with business partners, neighbors, team members, competitors, loved ones, and society stakeholders. When our focus is on serving the needs of those around us, we become a positive light, and people are drawn to us. One positive action for someone, other than ourselves, can open up a world of networks, turning our focus on their cause into value for our cause. How will you contribute to a cause other than your own this week?

Yes, the only thing standing between us and our goals is us, and it comes down to action. Sadly, knowing this and feeling inspired to take determined action can be miles apart. We can, however, start to bridge that gap by working a little smarter and contributing a little more to get things done. But sometimes, the extra pressure can bog us down, like we’ve been bitten by the paralysis bug. So, what’s the antidote? Flexibility. Reflect, reassess, and ask: Does it really need to be done now? What are the odds of actually getting it done now? What will the consequence or reward be as a result? And how can planning be improved next time? Which of your goals truly need more of you, and which just need revising?

The people in our life believe us to be a certain kind of person based on the actions they observe from us when we’re not looking. They probably have a much better impression of us than we have of ourselves. So sometimes, staying true to who we really are means taking actions, even when we’re not asked to—because it’s the right thing to do. It’s challenging to seize every personal growth opportunity that comes our way, but when people look up to us as a leader, achiever, friend, and world changer—although it’s tough, don’t we want to be that person for them? What out-of-the-ordinary action will you take today to be true to who you really are?

Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people. Eleanor Roosevelt.

don't worry when you are not recognized, but strive to be worthy of recognition. Abraham Lincoln.

Think back to a project you’ve been involved with when you had the most fun, experienced the most success, or achieved the most results. Chances are, the teammates around you were experiencing a severe case of inspiration … often passed down from a leader who was as passionate as they were motivational. Inspiration is the most powerful trade secret to getting a project off the ground; it’s the glue that keeps a team working together and the force that swiftly creates a groundswell of believers to enlist in the cause. How inspired are you today, and how will you infect the people in your life?

Often in life, we get an urge and, without thinking, we just go with it. That’s called a trigger, and it’s the beginning of a routine that leads to some type of reward. If we’re not careful, these triggers start getting in the way of productivity and performance. Triggers are like the buzz or ding of the smartphone (or a time of day that leads us to grab a doughnut). We need to slow things down, become intentional with our choices, and write them down in this FLASHPOINTS daily journal. We can then change the routines that result from the urges and replace them with behavior we consciously want. What are the things that get you side-tracked from what you want to do and should be doing?

Don’t be afraid to look foolish. Relish being the fool. History is littered with many so-called fools that time has since rebutted. Be a fool for your work, be a fool at play, be a fool for love, be a fool for family, be a fool for workmates, be a fool for customers, be a fool for life. With humor and time, it will be revealed that when a person loves their work, loves their play, loves their love, loves their family, loves their workmates, loves their customers … they love their life. In what area do you need to be foolish, so that you can love in that area more?
