FLASHPOINTS

We’ve all learned different anecdotes that apply to taking action, and this one’s an oldie but a goodie. When launching a project or idea or reaffirming the next steps forward, follow this easy structure to chart the course or tweak the direction: Who—who is involved, who should be enrolled, and who is the customer? What—describe the idea in a single detailed sentence. When—when will each step happen? Where—where will the idea first be realized? How— what steps are needed? Why—most importantly, why are we doing this project? Now use When and How to create or update the guiding checklist, and use Why to cheer everyone toward the goal. On which project do you need to apply the action ABCs?

From solopreneurs to industry titans, we all struggle with the tug of time that leaves little margin to find a mentor. It’s easier than ever, however, to identify coaching programs that fit every budget and season of our lives. A simple internet search reveals business personalities, websites and blogs of every ilk dedicated to inspire success seekers with their programs, systems and strategies. Don’t be fooled, however, by those salesy shysters who have a “system” to create wealth or success overnight … check references and do your homework! While it might take some time to find the appropriate mentor to join us on our journey, the time and heartache he or she will save us is worth its weight in … success. What voices are you listening to?

Trends end and fashions fade, but good style never goes away. Sure, we must be cunning and capitalize on trends, using them to draw attention to our brand, but it should never replace our core values. When establishing our personal, professional or corporate identity, focus less on what’s hot and what’s not, and more on the true and timeless image we want to portray. Remember, our image is formed in many ways: traditional iconography, branding and design, messaging, languaging, client interactions, and even the personalities of our teammates. Give careful consideration to how all these affect and form our image and turn down the emphasis on trends and fads. How will you build a lasting identity that’s true to your values … trend or no trend?

There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. ~ Albert Einstein

Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning. ~ Bill Gates

It’s common knowledge that some of the most significant challenges in life can be overcome more easily with good ol’ teamwork. After all, teamwork makes facing life’s challenges a whole lot more fun! The truth is, we are born to interact with others … at first with family, and then through life with friends, colleagues and community. In fact, most of the enjoyment in achieving anything worthwhile in life is in sharing it with others. Being part of a high performing, super-achieving team is a life-changing experience … a group of people, subscribed to the same vision, headed toward a shared goal, and experiencing unique interactions along the way is powerful and unforgettable. Have you ever experienced the rush of high-octane teamwork? How can you create that experience for your team?

A clear desk, tidy inbox and well-planned appointment book are not just for the meticulously organized. Keeping our environment clutter-free allows room for clear thinking and new innovation. In much the same way that extra physical weight can make simple tasks harder, the messes in our lives put an extra strain on our productivity and creativity muscles. It’s not just our inbox that is affected; it impacts every area in which we want to excel. Sometimes that mess seems overwhelming, and we wonder where the ____ we should even start. Simply pick one thing, dedicate 30 minutes to it each of the next five days, and watch what happens! What one thing bothers you the most, that you will begin tackling in the next 24 hours?

Great leaders are innovators and forward-thinkers, opportunity-watchers and problem-solvers. However, sometimes we’re so bogged down in our usual pattern of thinking that we can’t see a better way of doing things. The solution? We need someone to help point us to a better or different way, which can quickly increase our problem-solving capability. If we regularly seek out the counsel of mentors, our capacity and perspective are enhanced. Rather than relying on our old habits, we’ll be able to combine our usual approaches with new, novel ones. Success may still be ours without that trusted advisor, but with one … watch out, world! Humble yourself, ask for help, and prepare for great change. What challenge are you facing that could improve with a fresh perspective?

It’s a common question when you’re writing your bio, interviewing, or entering a competition— but no matter how many times the question is asked, the answer never seems to come any easier. It’s just three words, but for some reason, it’s difficult to commit to writing them down. When listing your three words, you’ll likely realize a couple of things: (1) they change all the time, and (2) we can reinvent ourselves as whomever we want and whenever we want, as often as every single day. They’re just words on a page, but we can turn them into actions and make them part of who we really are. What will be your three words today?

Pursuing what we want with dedication and envisioning our eventual success is likely already a strong part of us. Being in business and succeeding is really not all that different from being a successful employee, parent or student. The next time we’re tempted to put a lid on our dreams because they seem too audacious or mind-blowing, know that we’ve already accomplished many things that other people haven’t. Yes, there are uncertainties all around us, but they were there in the past and will be there in the future—but haven’t we already succeeded in spite of them? It really comes down to two questions: Despite the barriers, is my dream or goal important enough that I’ll give it a shot? And why?

The mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work until it’s open. ~ Sam Johnson

All of my growth is based NOT on what I know, but on what I learn. ~ John Maxwell

What sounds like a fairly contentious question, is not meant to be. When we think of leaders and entrepreneurs, there are certain characteristics that usually come to mind: open-minded, innovative, visionary, amicable, assertive, inspirational and honorable. When people are describing you when you’re out of the room (don’t be shocked, this does happen!), what words do you think they’re using? Would the description of the real you, based on what they see in everyday interactions, come close to the leader you aspire to be? Communication (both verbal and non-verbal) is an interesting thing … actions, after all, speak louder than words, right? What are the five characteristics you want people to recognize in you?

Made a mistake lately? Sure, everybody has, right? Of course. Now, are we going to learn from it and move on or carry it around, weighing us down? Let’s think of ourselves as a budget airliner ready to take off on a journey toward success. We have a certain weight limit, so we can only take the essentials. Let’s not weigh our journey down by worrying about our mistakes of the past. Let’s learn what we can and leave those mistakes where we made them. The bird in the sky does not mourn the worm it missed, but anticipates the worm to come. How can you apply lessons from a recent mistake to improve your situation this week?
