FLASHPOINTS

#FLASHPOINTS Wk23 Sun:A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer. #yoogozi

After five days of prompting and prodding new ideas and thoughts to come to mind, today we review what we’ve discovered. It’s time to take a peek back at our journaling, to review our thoughts, feelings, and action items; and see how well we did. After all, self-awareness is the key to initiate growth and realize lasting change.

Reflection could be the most underrated resource in our lives, businesses, and projects. It may not take much time to “take five” to quiet our minds and unwind after a stressful day or interaction or to ask our clients and stakeholders how things are going, but it does take effort. It’s easy to postpone this critical task, instead focusing on the urgent matters that vie for our attention. Regular reflection and introspection, however, provides the opportunity to fine-tune our thoughts, communications, relationships, products and services, which leads to increased confidence that our efforts are bringing value to those we love and serve. The only thing worse than being misunderstood or missing the mark is not even knowing it. What project or area of your life requires additional reflection and introspection?

When we want to learn, develop, and kick some professional booty, we usually look outward to resources such as books, websites, seminars, podcasts, and teachers. We naturally do this when we’re searching for answers. Yet, when it’s time for personal growth and enlightenment to discover our passion and purpose, we turn our attention inward for serious reflection and contemplation. After a provocative mountaintop transformation experience, or perhaps just some edification and refinement, we cast our search outward again to get to know ourselves even better. Here’s how we do that: meet new people and glean insight from their trials, triumphs and even their FLASHPOINTS stories. That perspective may be just what’s needed to recognize our purpose and realize our fullest potential. Where will you look next for clarity and inspiration?

The end of the week is the best time to plan for the coming week. And at this point, you’ve reviewed the previous week and can be prepared to make changes and take actions based on thought not reaction. You want to keep your goals in mind always. So today is your opportunity to look at yesterday’s Weekly Reflection and decide what you’re going to do and when. It is most often small tweaks that will lead to great success, fueled by a positive and grateful attitude.

Most leaders and high achievers strive toward a mission of enduring value, inspiration and legacy that’s bigger than themselves. It’s important we remember that our own leadership role is rarely permanent when building legacy, but it’s critical now for the ultimate success of our mission. Doesn’t it make sense, then, to “clone” ourselves in some fashion, to avoid organizational collapse? While modern science isn’t regularly cloning humans, there’s nothing stopping us from creating our own heir apparent right now. What if the best and brightest on the team were given the opportunity and coaching to continue our legacy, as leaders in their own right? That’s the start of building a succession plan, and it’s thinking with the end in mind. Whom on your team would you consider elevating, and why?

We get first shot at deciding which direction we take in life—in our careers, personal lives, health, relationships, education and more. We may have chosen to let someone else decide our path, but don’t be mistaken: it was still our choice. We don’t need to continually travel through life on the suggestions of others. We don’t have to be a product of our circumstances; we can choose to change and become a product of our own choices. Being proactive and taking action is paramount if we want to do things our own way. This means we need to get in the driver’s seat, take control of the wheel and step on the gas. How are you taking charge to create the kind of life you want?

Crowdsourcing is the practice of inviting the wider community to get involved in our project or business, either through collaboration or competition. Let’s say we are looking to name or improve our latest product—put it to the public and invite them to vote to help decide. Think about the successful introduction of blue M&Ms, Doritos Super Bowl ads, and 99designs; or consider the wide range of crowdfunding sites to see if what we’re doing resonates with consumers or stakeholders. Why harness the brainpower of just a few when there’s the potential to engage thousands? While there are pros and cons to crowdsourcing, it’s very possible that our next project is a perfect fit. What part of your plan can you delegate to the crowds?

Ah, the shellacking we give ourselves for procrastination. Those times when we give in to weakness and wasted precious time. It’s Facebook, Twitter, or the latest gaming forums or business blogs … whatever thief we allow to steal our time. How can we actually take advantage of this weakness? By turning it into a reward system! We can treat ourselves to engaging in this activity when we’ve completed a certain portion of our to-do list. Take an unpleasant task that cannot be deferred, give it your full attention for a solid hour, then reward yourself with the guilty pleasure of 15 minutes of procrastination! Giving ourselves permission to indulge can work to our advantage if we use it judiciously. How can you turn your weakness into a motivator?

Whether formally or informally, we’ve all benefited from a mentor at some stage in our lives. Perhaps it was a teacher, a parent, pastor, business colleague or simply a friend. It might have been in the form of great advice, a listening ear, an encouraging word, unconditional love or just the bonding of two peers sharing common interests and ideas and providing feedback to each other. While all of these situations are eye-opening for us, and it’s nice to be poured into by someone, it’s just as rewarding to be the one offering the mentoring. There are folks in our sphere of influence who’d appreciate learning from our experience, and would greatly value our input. To whom can you “pay it forward” to this week … or even this month?

A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills and uses these skills to accomplish his goals. ~ Larry Bird

Social media provides us with quick ways to spread stories and videos like never before. When a business is found skimping on value, service or delivery, word spreads like wildfire. A worldwide delivery service was shown in poor form when home videos surfaced, showing the mishandling of their customer’s parcels. The footage posed important questions for consumers, such as “What are the businesses that support me even when I’m not looking?” Sometimes any publicity is good publicity, but that’s a high-risk strategy. It’s better to be proactive and use our own “hidden cameras” to uncover glaring areas of underperformance. Our customers will definitely appreciate that. And so will we. What would a hidden camera reveal about your life or business?
