FLASHPOINTS

The end of the week is the best time to plan for the coming week. And at this point, you’ve reviewed the previous week and can be prepared to make changes and take actions based on thought not reaction. You want to keep your goals in mind always. So today is your opportunity to look at yesterday’s Weekly Reflection and decide what you’re going to do and when. It is most often small tweaks that will lead to great success, fueled by a positive and grateful attitude.

After five days of prompting and prodding new ideas and thoughts to come to mind, today we review what we’ve discovered. It’s time to take a peek back at our journaling, to review our thoughts, feelings, and action items; and see how well we did. After all, self-awareness is the key to initiate growth and realize lasting change.

Have you ever left an event positively buzzing after you met someone amazing? Yeah, me too. Surrounding ourselves with positive, encouraging people is key in keeping our own spirits up once the honeymoon of a new endeavor is over. Maybe it’s because these people are reminders of better times, or they have inspiring, courageous stories to share, or they’re simply a distraction from our own problems. Or maybe, just maybe, they’re our cosmic reminder to pay it forward, to get out there and be the one who uplifts others. Take this challenge: stop pushing and shoving toward personal goals; rather, serve and uplift others in small and simple ways. We’ll feel great, and they’ll be inspired. What are you so passionate about that the thought of it gets you buzzing?

Among the many responsibilities of leaders and achievers is the ability to make sound decisions that are in the best interests of those in our charge (including ourselves). This involves a clear-headed thought process: a pros and cons list, collecting and deciphering information, asking profound questions, gut checks and, from time to time, trial and error. The specifics of the decision often don’t matter (as there may be no clear right or wrong)—we just need to make a bold choice. What’s most important, after a survey of the landscape, is to stop over-analyzing, push through the fear, and take decisive action. When we miss the mark or intended target, we must simply make course corrections along the way. How can taking action change the trajectory of your success plan?

Building more meaningful relationships with clients and customers means identifying our core values and genuinely communicating them. As consumers become more savvy, they expect their values to align with the businesses they deal with. Do you participate in your local community or serve the less fortunate? Do you give your staff time off to volunteer and access to education? No matter our view on corporate philanthropy, it’s proven that support and active participation in causes that are of interest to our team improves productivity, morale, and loyalty. Let’s not be shy about sharing our actions with clients and the public—customers who don’t share our values may be turned off, but we’ll build deeper, more meaningful relationships with those who do. How do you share what’s important to you?

Even after we’ve achieved much success in our career, business, and our relationships, there’s still so much more to learn and achieve in life. Lifelong learning is the ticket to an open mind, infinite ideas and unimaginable opportunities. Every new lesson learned can help us see the world in a new light—and it’s awesome! If we’re feeling stumped for creativity or finding it difficult to focus on our ideas, maybe it’s time to get out of our stale routines and take up a new learning opportunity. Perhaps it’s time to infuse a new perspective by adding someone new to our team or personal in-crowd. What opportunity to learn will you embark on next?

It’s through failure that we grow, learn and create. Failure itself is not noteworthy, but what we learn from the journey is. Let’s say we host a gala fundraiser, and only 10 people show up (ouch!)—the achievement is in discovering how to increase attendance the next time. Perhaps we launch a new product, and sales are on the skids (d’oh!)—achievement is in identifying what can be improved, and then taking action: changes to the product or the way it’s marketed, packaged or delivered. When failure is just another item on the to-do list, rather than cause for self-flagellation, our minds become open to endless possibilities and bold steps toward recovery and learning. What projects will hit the “fail at something” category on your to-do list this week?

Inaction is a common reaction to not knowing what step to take next. It’s far easier and less risky to procrastinate and do nothing than to take the “wrong” step. Right? Wrong! Doing nothing or carrying on without taking risks or making changes will stunt our personal and professional growth. If we take that first tiny step, then take another, soon it gets easier to take chances and make changes, because we have momentum. So is doing nothing really easier or less risky than taking action? It might be easier in terms of decision-making, but it won’t help us reach our goals any faster—in fact, quite the opposite. Be truly honest: Is taking action and calculated risk an essential part of your daily diet?

If people really are our biggest asset, shouldn’t we respect them? Associates, partners and advisors may have joined us because of our inspirational vision, but it’s time to turn them into a highly functioning team to help launch or expand our project. Start by treating them the way we want our customers and clients to be treated. It’s baffling to see managers and business owners treat their team like garbage, then expect them to turn around and serve their clients with a smile. We must create opportunities for our team to bond and develop a common purpose, allowing them to attend educational and personal development programs, treating them to lunches occasionally, and allowing them to participate in community projects. Growth WILL result! How are you investing in your biggest asset?

Our personal and professional vision statement should excite and prove to be a resource to refuel, recharge and re-energize our efforts. Properly defined and crafted, a vision will assist in communicating our dreams and aspiration for our own future and that of our sphere of influence. A vision that inspires greatness is both positive and inspirational… defining what life could be. An awesome vision statement will inspire us every time we read it, attract superstars to join us on our quest and serve as a guide to shape future decisions to grow our life and business. Does your vision for your future and the future of your team excite and inspire you to take action?

Let’s start with this: there’s no higher calling than serving others. Period. If you’re looking to “up-level” your life or business, forget about “the secret” and “systems” the shysters are peddling. Whether you believe in religion, karma, self-development, or something entirely different, being of service to others is the only way to experience a life of significance and success. Service is not about forgetting our own goals in place of others’ … it’s not even about charity. It’s about the realization that the world is not all about us … it’s about the other people out there, and the contributions we can make in serving them. Grasping this simple truth will put your entire life into perspective. When was the last time you served others with zero expectations of remuneration?

Society has this idea that there’s a magic formula for how much we should “work” and how much we should “play.” Most high achievers merge the two—they accept the hard work and understand that changing the status quo often requires long hours. For some, the grueling quest is a rewarding experience that defines them. For others, after some time, the quest stops working and becomes a drain. The answer is not in searching for some magic formula but following instincts, being happy and doing what works for us and our family. If being a fulltime entrepreneur works, great! Who is society to judge us? If it stops working, we need to change our habits and spend time doing other things that are enjoyable. What rules are you setting about achievement?
