Hi, I want to share with you an interesting, powerful, and frankly pretty simple visual when it comes to partnerships whether we’re building teams in the business arena or in sports, or you on a team in the military. Frankly, this even applies to the partnerships that are most important to us in military, in our love relationships or marriage. That is the very simple visual of the clothespin.

Hi, I’m Larry Broughton. There are a lot of myths out there about team building in our partnerships in entrepreneurship and in leadership areas. A lot of them drive me pretty nutty, but the one that really drives me the craziest is the one about the Myth of the Lone Wolf. That is this romanticized idea that we can do all kinds of things by ourselves. If we just try harder, if we just grind it out, if we isolate enough, if we turn inward and out that we can reach pinnacles of success that no one else can. It makes for great romance novels. It makes for great movies. It is not reality.

If you take a look at the clothespin, the single side of a clothespin, it really doesn’t do much. It certainly cannot reach its force potential. It certainly cannot do what it’s created for functionally just by one side of the clothespin. When we add in the skills and the talents and the gifts of the other side of the clothespin, then of course we add in the functionality of the spring, this is when this clothespin really starts to meet its full potential, and really use the gifts that it was created for.

It’s the same thing when it comes to building teams. We can’t do it by ourselves. We have to capitalize on the skills, talents, gifts of those folks that are around us in order to really meet our full potential.

I hope that you enjoyed this little visual of the clothespin. I hope you’ll all apply this to your team today.
